Brisbane South Workshop 1 Overview

‘Right care, first time, where you live’ held its first workshop of the systems modelling phase in March in the Brisbane South region, with the support and collaboration of the Brisbane South PHN.

One of the things that is really exciting about the systems modelling phase of this Program is the participatory action research process that we are undertaking. Our Brain and Mind Centre team want to ensure that we collaborate with the community to develop a systems model for the region, that truly reflects what is happening in the region. To achieve that objective, our co-design process involves including a diverse range of people in the systems model development process.

At the Brisbane South workshop, with the tremendous support and help from the Brisbane South PHN and their partners, we were able to bring together people who work at the PHN, young people with lived experience of the mental health system in the region, service providers, clinicians and carers. It was a very creative and dynamic process, and it was quite inspiring to see so many people in the room who are so passionate about improving the mental health system in the region for young people.

“I think it's great to bring us all together. I think today will be the start of a journey, not necessarily the end. And I would hope that following this that we can start to evolve better, better systems and modelling for not just mental health in youth and young people, but across the health system itself,” said Mike Bosel, CEO of the Brisbane South PHN, about the systems modelling process.

Jordan van Rosmalen, a youth lived experience advocate, said: “Lived experience is one of the most important pieces of this process because there's so much that we're missing in our data collection, in our service delivery, and our commissioning models at the moment, because lived experience hasn't been a part of that.

And I think that's what's meant to differentiate these projects from other approaches and tools that we've developed in the past is that we've got those direct experiences of this regional system and that's feeding into the model at this stage of the process. It's not coming in later, it's not coming in afterwards, it's coming in now. I think that the approach to co-design here has been incredibly authentic and genuine, and that's incredibly important to a successful product.”
