Brain and Mind Centre Youth Model of Care

The Brain and Mind Centre Youth Model of Care (BMC Youth Model) was developed by Professor Ian Hickie and Associate Professor Elizabeth Scott in partnership with young people.  It evolved out of years of research and clinical practice, and the strong desire to empower young people in their care and really listen to them about the care that they really need.

Associate Professor Liz Scott says: “Some of the things that I've learned through working with young people is how much we still have yet to learn about how to manage mental health problems and psychological difficulties in young people. What I do know is that we still do not do it very well. We don't reach enough young people. We don't provide the access to care that young people need”.

“We often don't provide care that young people want. We provide the care that we know how to do as clinicians, but we don't actually think about the young person in their community in the context of their family,” she says.

“In collaborating with young people and working in partnership and really, we hope, listening to what young people are saying, we can actually do much better and we can do much better across the whole system of mental health, not just at the Brain and Mind Centre, but actually in youth services around the country, in specialised mental health care in Australia and around the world”, she says.
